Wagashi scandal - not so sweet

Postby L S » Wed Oct 31, 2007 1:39 pm

From IHT

ISE, Japan, Oct. 26 — It was supposed to be a celebratory year for Akafuku, a confectioner that had been selling bean-jam sweets here since 1707. On its 300th anniversary, its top-selling sweets were still indispensable gifts to bring back home or to the office after a trip to Ise Shrine here, Japan's holiest religious site.
Instead, Akafuku has become the latest Japanese food company to be exposed for lying about the contents of its products, tampering with expiration-date labels and recycling ingredients. For only the second time in its history, Akafuku, which was forced to halt production during World War II because of a sugar scarcity, has suspended operations, this time indefinitely.....
.....The nearly daily disclosures have shaken Japanese consumers, who have long been willing to pay a premium for Japanese food products that were, or so it was said, safer than imported goods, especially from China. But the scandals involving the freshness of products by Akafuku, as well as two other nationally known confectioners, Shiroi Koibito and Fujiya, have resonated beyond the marketplace in a way that chicken or beef does not.

Mister Donuts food is kind of foul anyway :puke:

I never eat anything from Mister Donuts (the name creeps me out too) or Lottereia anymore, because they've both managed to make me violently ill in the past :(

I'm losing track of these scandals. Just for my own benefit, in recent times we have had the following firms busted for causing sickness or mislabelling:

Snow Brand Milk (milk)
Snow Brand Food (beef)
Nippon Ham
Meat Hope
Fujiya
Shiroi Koibito
Akafuku
Ofukumochi-Honke

Any others I've missed along the way? Wasn't some duff tuna used to make a large batch of negitoro rolls somewhere?

What's a little taint among friends! Mister Donut ain't that bad, but of course I like anything with a hole in the middle, so my opinion might be a bit prejudiced!

I guess it depends on the kind of taint you're talking about.

I give Mister Donuts a pass for any minor misdeads. It kept me sane on many a donut craving episode over many, many years. Hell, I miss it so much I even ode them in my Avatar!:-P

Scandal unleashes monster cookie sales
Asahi
SAPPORO--Apparently, scandal sells when it comes to Hokkaido's most notorious cookie.

"Shiroi Koibito" (white beloved ones) chocolate-filled thin cookies made by Ishiya Co., are flying off store shelves one month after the company resumed production following a three-month suspension over an embarrassing mislabeling scandal.

Sales during the last month are three times the level of the same period last year.

Sapporo-based Ishiya resumed sales of the popular souvenir on Nov. 22, after coming under fire in August when it was revealed that the company altered best-before dates of the cookies when it repackaged unsold products.

The company was one of many food companies caught up this year in falsification scandals regarding dates or origin of materials....more...
