Sapporo Hospital Sees Killer Bacteria Outbreak

Postby Mulboyne » Fri Feb 08, 2008 9:36 pm

[floatl]Image[/floatl]AFP: 6 die of incurable bacteria infection in Japan
A Japanese hospital said Friday it has launched an investigation after six people died of infection with an incurable bacteria, a hospital official said Friday. Thirteen people treated at the emergency room of Sapporo Medical University Hospital were found since 2006 to have contracted multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, the official said. Six of them died of the bacterial infection, but it is not known yet if they contracted the bacteria at the hospital, he said. Pseudomonas Aeruginosa is a common bacteria found in moist ground and water, usually not contagious to a healthy human body. But it can develop into an infection when an individual has a weak immune system. The multi-drug resistant form is more alarming as it has developed resistance against a number of medicines. The 13 people who contracted the bacteria were treated at the hospital on the northern island of Hokkaido from September 2006 to July last year, hospital official Kiichiro Igarashi said. "We have not yet confirmed if they had become infected with the bacteria at the hospital," he said. The Japanese health ministry has ordered the hospital to investigate the cases and a possible link among the infected patients, he said

hmmm... i wonder why this would ever happen in japan....

*cough* shit, doctor i feel kind of sick, the medicine i get at the drug store is kind of weak, and everybody just tells me to come see you anyway.. oh, whats that you say, you have something that will take care of me? an antibiotic? i didnt know that those worked on colds and flus.. oh, youve given them to every other patient that has come in with these symptoms, well, i guess it couldnt hurt then...

the j doctors are penecillin pushers, theyd give it to you for weak eyesight.

Had some doctor try to give me a prescription for a member of the vancomycin family of antibiotics once. That stuff is only supposed to be used in extreme cases, as it really is the last ditch antibiotic against general antibiotic resistant bacteria.
Had another doctor try to give me a penicillin-based antibiotic even when I wrote in big letters that I'm allergic to penicillin. I swear, if I'm having a heart attack, you guys please carry me to Narita, put me on a plane to the US or Hong Kong...I'd rather take my chances with the flight.
Problem seems to be that once a doctor completes his/her degree qualifications, they really don't have to take any refresher courses to maintain their ability to practice medicine in Japan. Thus, the 60 year old geezer doctor is still practicing the medicine that he/she learned 30 years ago. Strive for mediocrity.

it was nice to actually be covered in japan, but the level of health care technology was horrifically comical.
sadly, the over prescription of antibiotics is not only in japan, but here in mexico for example, its a little bit more warranted as your bound to eat something bad every now and again.
