Strangely enough, I've actually been in the office of the Population Research Institute...

I kind of wondered what they actually researched.

That article is really misleading. I thought from the headline that people were demanding money from their parents for their everyday life, but when it talks about receiving congratulatory money or New Years money, that seems to be quite different. Just last week our in-laws gave our son Y150 000 as a congratulatory gift for entering university. We didn't need the money, but will gladly take it and use it for his new apartment. But then we will return the money in other ways, so I don't think that is an example of sponging.

When we first got married we got some money from my in-law but not much because they couldn't afford much. My Dad helped pay for a blown transmission on my car once but that was it. My Mom has never been in a position to help us.

Fortunately 13 years after we got married we are now in a position to help out my In-laws and my Mom as they reach retirement age. We've already asked my Mother and Father in-law to consider selling their house in Japan and relocating to Texas. Certainly a HUGE decision but I would be happy to have them. I'm already shopping for a larger house, just in case.

A more interesting story would be, "__% of married men sponge off their wives..."

Here's a comment that was emailed to me about, " 60% of married 'adults' are spongers".
Isn't it just... the way it is ?
I mean, for once, isn't the Japanese way of life about preserving the family structure ?
In which manual of life is it written that kids should cut contact with their parents ?
And if I remember well, 19th century bourgeoisie was also about keeping the family together, the son taking over the father's factory/wealth when he retire after having worked along him before.
Breaking the family just serve to make individual weaker most of the time. Divide to conquer.
