Naruhito Says Foreigners And Japanese Should Live In Harmony

Postby Mulboyne » Wed Jun 11, 2008 10:09 pm

[floatr]Image[/floatr]IOL: Japan calls for greater immigrant respect
Japan's Crown Prince Naruhito said Wednesday it was important for Japanese and foreigners to live with mutual respect as the nation gradually takes in more outsiders. The prince spoke ahead of a visit to Brazil to mark 100 years since the first settlement there by Japanese..."I think it is important to create an environment in which foreigners living in Japan and Japanese live together by paying respect to one another," Naruhito said. Naruhito said that foreign residents trying to adapt to Japan may be "struggling due to differences in culture and language." "I heard that not a small number of children are unable to catch up with class in school or to get education," he said.

Great, but lets see him denounce the uyoku, and support anti-discrimination laws.

Yes, foreigners in Japan need to adapt to Japanese laws and cultures. But it is not fair that foreigners who do commit the incredible amount of effort to learn and adapt to Japanese culture and become fluent in Japanese, to still have to be subject to discrimination, harassment, and hate speech in Japan with no legal protection.

Hey, well all right! Okay Take, you're on! How will you call down His Imperial Highness The Crown Prince for worrying about foreigners? You can not charge up to his door and threaten him with your 2ch blond girl dreams. Remember that!

Why the fuck should linguistic proficiency and 'cultural competence' make the slightest bit of difference regarding these issues?

Gee, do ya think that might have something to do with the lack of semi-decent bilingual education? I mean, seriously, you know you must be do something wrong when you're bilingual education efforts are worse than those of the US.

And BTW it seems a little ambiguous here, but is his point that Japanese people need to be more respectful of foreigners, foreigners need to be more respectful of Japanese, or both?

Both of my sons finished their primary education in Japan after having started school in the US. The reason they did so well is because they were emersed in the language and were forced to communicate in Japanese.
I don't think bilingual education is workable at all in any country. It just introduces Balkanization.
