Kyodo via Japan Today: Brazil school principal demands rail fare discounts for students
The principal of a school for Brazilian children living in Japan and supportive civic groups on Monday called on East Japan Railway Co (JR East) to grant Brazilian students discounts on commuter rail passes just as it does for Japanese students. While such discounts in principle apply only to students of schools certified by the Japanese School Education Law, the Brazilians argue that students at schools licensed by the Brazilian government should also be eligible for cheaper rail fares. Julieta Yoshimura, head of a school for Brazilians in Saitama Prefecture, named Centro Educacional Canarinho, told JR East officials at its headquarters in Tokyo of a Brazilian junior high school student who has to pay 32,000 yen every month, the regular price charged to adult commuters, whereas a school discount available to Japanese students would have pushed the price down to 13,000 yen.
