Toyoda Police Warn Foreign Residents About Crime

Postby Mulboyne » Fri Jul 04, 2008 12:50 am

The Yomiuri reports (Japanese) that police in Toyoda City have produced information sheets in English, Chinese, Spanish and Portuguese advising foreigners to take precautions against car theft and burglary. They also carry reminders about cycling regulations and the new law which makes it illegal not to wear a seatbelts in the back of a car. Police say they have produced such information sheets for the first time because they have one of the largest populations of foreigners in Japan. If that photograph is anything to go by, it's a bit of a shame they didn't ask some of them to do a quick stint of proofreading. However, it's a step forward if the police there are treating foreign residents as potential victims of crime rather than perpetrators.

Foreigners... not being arrested.... informed of laws ?
Given information... in their language..

What's the catch ?!

Japanese have accepted the idea that other people are living in their country ?

nah - that can't be the case.
I broke a mirror this morning, which means I should be getting 7 years of bad luck - but my lawyer says he can get me 5.

Aren't the words 'gaijin' and 'victim' mutually exclusive?
His [Brendan Behan's] last words were to several nuns standing over his bed, "God bless you, may your sons all be bishops."

"Stealing from aboard a vehicle
Stealing parts from a car
Please take about them!"

It sounds more like they are encouraging car theft and burglary than advising people to take precautions against them.
