
Jane Everhart said she and the Detroit area high school students she has chaperoned on an exchange program to the Japanese city of Toyota will never forget their experience...But Everhart and other local supporters of the Sister Cities program -- in existence with Toyota since 1960 -- say they are upset that the City of Detroit canceled this year's visit to the city by Japanese students without formally notifying the group. Detroit officials say the cancellation is the result of city budget cuts. "It's simply outrageous to allow an internationally respected program to just be wiped out," said Everhart...The first she heard about the cancellation, she said, was from a friend in Japan who had read a local Japanese newspaper article about Detroit's decision to terminate this year's exchange.
