Cash-Strapped Detroit Cancels Japan Student Exchange

Postby Mulboyne » Sun Jul 20, 2008 12:24 am

[floatr]Image[/floatr]Freep: Student exchange visit canceled this year
Jane Everhart said she and the Detroit area high school students she has chaperoned on an exchange program to the Japanese city of Toyota will never forget their experience...But Everhart and other local supporters of the Sister Cities program -- in existence with Toyota since 1960 -- say they are upset that the City of Detroit canceled this year's visit to the city by Japanese students without formally notifying the group. Detroit officials say the cancellation is the result of city budget cuts. "It's simply outrageous to allow an internationally respected program to just be wiped out," said Everhart...The first she heard about the cancellation, she said, was from a friend in Japan who had read a local Japanese newspaper article about Detroit's decision to terminate this year's exchange. James Canning, deputy press secretary to Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, confirmed that the program was discontinued this year due to money problems...more...

Not so much Bush's as it is Kilpatrick's fault. Once he's gone and they elect someone that seriously "knows" the heck what they're doing, things will improve. The man is a total embarrassment
For the city of Detroit. Mickey Mouse could do a better job at fixing that city. Unbelievable how something like this could ever happen. This guy makes Bush look like a Saint!

Toyota and Detroit, sister cities?
