Man, I was all excited by the title of this thread. I was ready to confess, but then I read what the posts were actually about....the secrets stay with me.

"Death row inmates fall from a square place with a thump," Hatoyama said

That's what we call a 'suspended sentence'.

AFAIK hanging or decapitation seem to be more humane than the electric chair or lethal injection

personally, I'd rather go out in a televised fight-to-the-death armed only with a chainsaw against angry drugged up grizzly bears
it could be sponsored by Stihl

Why don't any of these countries that still execute people just use a lethal overdose of morphine? That's probably as humane as one can be considering that you are taking someone else's life.

That's not as clean a way to go out as you might think. Can take a long time too.

I agree. Make them fight for life. Death Row inmates can fight for a sentence reduced to 25 years total.

I think they should be forced to smoke 2 cartons of cigarettes a day and eat ungodly amounts of mayonnaise until death...

But then again they are probably already doing that.

According to Wikipedia this is how it happens:

Before the condemned prisoner is blindfolded, he or she is allowed to leave a last message if he or she so wishes, then led to the death chamber. The noose is put in place and the prisoner's knees tied together. The trap-door of the gallows is operated remotely from a separate room: three to five selected prison officers each press a switch, only one of which is wired to the trap-door release.

It doesn't say what kind of drop they use. Several other internet sources claim that the only method being employed worldwide at the moment is the long drop, I could'nt find any one saying anything particular about what kind of drop is used in Japan.

Hatoyama is apparently incensed by an unsigned piece in the regular Asahi column "Soryushi" (素粒子), which calls him a shinigami (死に神) or "god of death" because of the frequent times he has approved carrying out executions of death row prisoners, most recently in the case of Tsutomo Miyazaki. He believes that he is just following the law and says the Asahi commentary is showing contempt for him personally and the legal system as a whole. Back in 2005, Justice Minister Seiken Sugiura refused to authorize any executions during his eleven months in office. Also from 1990, there was a three year period where four successive Justice Ministers refused to do so which marked an informal moratorium. The late eighties had seen several high profile acquittals of death-row inmates which shook public confidence in the system. Since the restart in 1993, Hatoyama has authorized more executions than any of his predecessors.

EDIT: Here's the Kyodo story now on Japan Today.
...Raising his voice at one point and hitting the table in front of him, Hatoyama said, ‘‘After agonizing over the decision, I have authorized executions in line with the judiciary and provisions of the law. I would not mind at all any insult to myself but I would also think it was an insult to the people executed,’’ the minister said. ‘‘Ill-advised writing like this, I believe, is making the world worse"...

I have some experience in these matters. I've been hanged, sat in old sparky and I was lethally injected. And I gotta say: out of the three, hanging ain't so bad. It's a quick death and you get to do a little jig on the way out.
