Philippine Gang Hits Easy Japanese Mark In Quezon City

GMANews: Salisi gang strikes in Quezon City, takes Y1.5M from Japanese
QUEZON CITY, Philippines - A dinner date ended on a sour note for a Japanese national and his fiancée after losing Y1.5 million to a suspected member of the Salisi Gang Sunday night. Radio dzBB's Allan Gatus reported that the incident took place at a restaurant at the corner of Quezon and Timog avenues in Quezon City. The Japanese national, Akihiko Shibukawa, 61, said he was with his fiancée at the restaurant when he noticed a man "acting suspiciously." He said the man's movements distracted them, and when he looked at his bag containing Y1.5 million, it was already opened, its contents gone.

I'm not sure whether to be more struck by the fact that Shibukawa left such a large wedge in an unattended bag or that he's 61 with a fiancée.

fiance, Philippines, old man, lots of money

No, makes perfect sense actually when you connect the dots.

I wouldn't be surprised if the fiance was involved in the caper. How would they know he was carrying such a wad of money unless they had been tipped off.

Very possible on the tip off, but J-tourists are supposedly well known to carry all their cash with them as they don't trust the hotels and so forth...

Whether that's true about all tourists or not, many people in many places believe that, which automatically makes J-tourists a mark.
