
A Maritime Self-Defense Force petty officer who sustained an injury after drinking to excess was transported by a P-3C patrol plane from an airbase in Iwoto island on Oct. 16, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned. The 46-year-old petty officer first class fractured the bone around his left eye socket. "The injured officer violated service rules by imbibing an excessive quantity of alcohol" an MSDF official said. "However, moving him by plane was unavoidable." According to the MSDF, the petty officer had attended a reception to welcome new personnel on the day. However, he apparently continued drinking in his room after the party ended and injured himself when he fell and struck his face on the toilet, the MSDF said.
