Sim Japan

Postby Charles » Mon Nov 17, 2008 1:56 pm

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing has released a most fascinating infographic video, "Ensuring The Future of Food." It looks like a version of The Sims.

Spot the nihonjinron, it clearly asserts that foreign food is a threat to the wellbeing of Japanese and Japan itself.

Via MeFi. They have some great Japan-spotters at MeFi.

... I blame Kevin Rudd. ^_~

Okay, seriously though... it's not really any different to what Japan has done in the past, but then no different from what other countries do as well... Particularly Australia and the US (though I can only speak on behalf of Australia from experience).

They're right to think that way though in this case... And I'd applaud them somewhat. The truth is, it won't work... but then the mentality of Japanese is to follow on a group scale, so who knows... Maybe it will... It definantly doesn't work in Australia, because half the people couldn't be assed, and the other half wouldn't buy junk (which with the exception of produce covers almost all manufactured goods within Australia).

but I think its also an advert for protectionism, especially trade protectionism of the J-farming industry. As soon as I watched the Big Macs on the Japanese table and the ships coming across the sea with American, China and Aussie flags I almost could predict what the last few sentences were going to say.

Looks like some kind of new diet plan to me.

Apparently all you have to do is go to the supermarket and buy a fish, and you'll immediately lose about 10 kilos.

I gotta try that.

If you cook your own food, rather than buying from conbinis and restaurants, you'll probably drop a few pounds just by having more control over your ingredients and portions, whether you choose fish or beef.

While there may some protectionism motives, I applaud efforts to eat more locally-produced food. In addition to making food prices less susceptible to international market fluctuations, it also results in a lot less fuel being consumed for transport.
I have a blog. Last update: August 18, 2013.
