The Register is reporting on (alternate ZDNet article) the latest list of the top 500 supercomputers in the world. Top of the list is the Earth Simulator Center in Yokohama, Japan, with a benchmark performance of 35.86 Tflop/s. HP and IBM claim 159 and 158 of the systems respectively

That explains all the arguments over at Slashdot about the benchmarks of the new PowerMac G5 vs. the Xeon systems.

All I know is that it's pretty, hellaciously fast, does everything I want and more - and is wayyy out of my price range. (for now)

(Okay, it does look more than a little like a cheese grater, but with specs like these, it can look however it wants.)

It is, isn't it? They released the pics and specs yesterday. We now have a surplus of geek drool and will have to either pay subsidies or find an unsuspecting country to export it to.

Now...where are the new Powerbooks with the monster chip in them?
