Fire! Fire! Fire!

Postby GuyJean » Tue Feb 10, 2009 8:24 am

My heart goes out to Australians during this time. As a kid growing up in forest fire country, encountering them is very scary experience; they can jump across a valley taking everything in it's path. Creating their own weather patterns and causing trees to explode.. I had a fear of fire for years.

An explosion, a scream, then silence

.. The death toll continued to rise as rescue workers discovered more bodies. Some victims died in cars while trying to flee the flames. Others had stayed put inside houses that were burned to their shells.

One man's car caught on fire as he fled the town of Kinglake.

"Both of us had to get out -- get into the car -- just took off into the smoke," said one man. "There's flames coming inside the car."

"It was terrifying," said a woman. "This was not ordinary. It was an absolute inferno."

"I lost two kids, mate," a grieving father said. "Nothing will bring them back."

"I've heard of sad stories of flames going over cars and maybe one person surviving," Dr. John Coleridge of Victoria's Alfred Hospital told reporters on Sunday. "I suspect today they will find lots of cars with people who haven't survived."..

Another fire in Beijing, right next to the strange CCTV building..

The situation in Victoria is horrifying.

If you're in the wrong place at the wrong time these eucalyptus oil fueled fires are not something you can run from. They're incredibly fast, the heat is intense enough to melt steel, and all the flammable vapor in the air means they can jump highways and firebreaks with ease.

So now, as of Tuesday February 10, AM, we have 173 confirmed dead and many more to be found. Survivors will have to start again from scratch. Not an easy thing to do in the best of times. And then there are those who have lost friends or family.

And to think that much of this is due to arsonists (some is due to lightning). I wonder if they're sleeping well at night.
