I've never really understood how insanely heavy drinking is "A-OK!" but a tiny amount of grass will totally destroy a person's life.

(Crazily I am from BC -- bud central! -- but have never tried it. I still don't get the whole Japanese "drink yourself to death = ok" but "tiny amount of weed = horrible evil poison" thing though.)

My God she looks like a Jack Special* in that photo!

Took me awhile to find a semi-SFW photo of here via Google, this is about the "safest" one I could find...

Even before this arrest, the newspaper editorials were unanimous in condemning the apparent growing use of marijuana by students at the nation's top universities as evidenced by recent arrests. Because they have been able to buy seeds so easily, some of these kids may have been lulled into a false sense of security and so haven't taken care to conceal their activity. The sumo busts might have been a chance occurrence but I can't help wondering whether some of these other arrests are a result of police arresting some dealers and following up their customers lists.

Yomiuri: 43 students probed over pot since '03
Students from at least 10 universities in the Kanto and Kansai regions have in the past five academic years been arrested on suspicion of violating the Cannabis Control Law, or papers pertaining to their cases have been sent to local prosecutors, according to a Yomiuri Shimbun survey. No illegal sales or use of marijuana on university campuses had been reported until last year. However, marijuana violations have been confirmed at Keio, Hosei and Kansai universities since the beginning of this year. Many universities have been deeply concerned about marijuana use, and 21 have been forced to take preventive measures, such as campus patrols.

The Yomiuri conducted a survey at 24 major universities in the regions. Twenty-two universities responded to the survey. Meiji University and Teikyo University did not respond. According to the survey, 10 universities confirmed that since April 2003 their students had been arrested on suspicion of violating the law, or papers on the cases had been sent to prosecutors. The 10 universities were Kanto Gakuin, with 14 students involved; Keio, with eight; Hosei, with five; Sophia and Chuo, with four each; Tokyo, with three; Kansai, with two; and Doshisha, Kwansei Gakuin and Ryukoku with one each.

Upon what do they base this sanctimonious condemnation? I'm sure the old men running the papers feel quite proud of themselves in wipping up some condemnation for the nations "degenerate" youth as they themselves puff on a cigarette and knock back some shōchū.

I know your question is largely rhetorical but here's a snippet from the Asahi:
More young people today are experimenting with marijuana...Marijuana-related scandals continue to crop up in show business and sports circles. There is no question that the problem is becoming widespread. The Cannabis Control Law regulates marijuana possession and cultivation, but it does not address its use. This, in addition to the fact that marijuana is not deemed illegal in some countries, perhaps accounts for the absence of a sense of guilt among many young people. This may have been the case with the two Keio students. But what awaited them was the grave reality of being arrested.

Not only have their lives spun out of control for now, but they will also be in deeper trouble if they had approached friends and encouraged them to use marijuana. University officials had to hold a news conference and apologize in public. The price these offending students must pay for breaking the law is beyond measure. Further disturbing is that smoking pot can be the first step toward indulging in other controlled substances. For instance, there are marijuana dealers who try to sell addictive stimulants and other drugs to their customers. Anyone who falls for their sales pitch will be crossing the point of no return. We must remind all young people of the terrible pitfalls that lie beyond marijuana.

In the case of marijuana, its the "justice" system that destroys the persons future rather than any natural pharmacological effect of the plant.

Possibly the biggest problem when compared to tobacco or alcohol is that the growing and preparation of marijuana for personal use is relatively simple in comparison, and hence could have a financial impact on corporate entities with a vested interest in the far more addictive nicotine drug.

I think you misunderstood my message. I'm well aware that small amounts of mj aren't going to destroy a person.

Though I've never tried growing tobacco I can say that making beer and wine isn't rocket science. Making a good Scotch or gin as good as Bombay Sapphire definitely requires more time and knowledge.

Making good tasting liquor is extremely hard. Making strong liquor, moonshine/white lightning, takes very little skill and lots of equipment. To grow mj one only needs basic botany skills to get a product that will be what the average BC stuff is, same difficulty as tomatos. Farming is not rocket science, if it was farmers would rule the world. But as we all know... they don't

Sorry dude, I wasn't having a go at you. My sarcasm was directed at the authorities who are stirring this up.

Some news reports are suggesting that the AV starlet girlfriend in this story, Risa Koda, has been arrested again for drugs. She received an eighteen month suspended sentence last time so she may now be going to prison.

I think the TV news was saying today that about eight Hosei University students will be expelled for having smoked weed. If that's what happened back when I and many of my fellow FGers were students the campuses would have been quite quiet.
His [Brendan Behan's] last words were to several nuns standing over his bed, "God bless you, may your sons all be bishops."
