Former Olympic Gymnast Arrested Yet Again For Drugs

Postby Mulboyne » Tue Feb 17, 2009 2:48 am

[floatr]Image[/floatr]Satoko Okazaki, who was known by the press as the "Japanese Comăneci" when she competed in the Montreal Olympics in 1976, has been arrested once again for drugs. After retiring from her sport in 1978, Okazaki helped promote aerobics and appeared regularly on television until the birth of her first child in 1984 after which she retired from the entertainment business. In 1995, she was back in the limelight when police found marijuana in her car for which she was given a suspended sentence. However, she was caught in possession once more during the suspension period and so served eighteen months in prison during which time she went through a divorce. On her release from prison, she went to work, perhaps inadvisedly, at a medical supplies company and was arrested for a third time on drugs charges in 1999 which brought a twenty month spell in jail. She remarried when she got out of the clink but, in July 2005, Okazaki, was caught in possession for a fourth time and received a two and a half year sentence. Seemingly determined to undermine the government's statistics on recidivism, Okazaki, now 48, has been arrested for a fifth time. She was driving with a male friend in Nakano ward, Tokyo when she made a right turn without indicating. This was spotted by a patrol car which then stopped her for questioning. Okazaki, known by her married name as Nakajima, began acting erratically so the police asked her to accompany them to the station where a search of her car found eight small plastic bags of drugs on the back seat.

A Japanese gymnast that likes to blaze... what in the world could possibly be more wonderful? And what do they do? Put her in jail. Reminds me of the Taliban destroying those beautiful Buddhist artifacts.

Japan is way too harsh on drug possession charges. OK, be tough on dealers, but to treat addicted people like horrible criminals is just wrong.

A thing of understated beauty, this sentence.

But AK, don't you see the beauty of getting out of jail on a drug related bust and going directly to work for a pharmaceutical company? Only in Japan!

Japan isn't the only country with fvcked drug laws. Many countries criminalise people for smoking the wrong kind of plant. Unfortunately most people here don't know the difference between heroin and marijuana. Some do though :) and I hope one day they will fight to stop people going to jail for crap like this.

I agree, but from their perspective, that's the point. Treat the dealers and the addicts the same that way, they WILL get the message that doing drugs is wrong in Japan. A "NO TOLERANCE" attitude. That is why most Japanese in their mind are way, way disappointed in Phelps and lost all respect for the man.

Malaysia, Singapore, Bahrain, etc., have a little stronger "NO TOLERANCE" attitude.
