South Korea To Allow Dual Nationality Cases

Postby Mulboyne » Sat Mar 28, 2009 8:46 am

This will be of interest to Japan residents where a similar debate has just begun.

Xinhua: S Korea to allow dual citizenship to attract talents
The South Korean government announced that it will allow foreign nationals to hold dual citizenship on a selective basis as early as later this year, South Korea's daily Chosun Ilbo reported Friday. The Ministry of Justice said it will submit a bill to the National Assembly by June to attract more global talent into the country without giving up their nationality. A non-Korean, who wishes to hold South Korean citizenship along with his or her nationality, should be evaluated by the government as a "talented person with ample potential to contribute to the nation's development," according to the ministry. Although the criteria for "talented foreigners" remains blurry for the time being, the ministry said it would include those who have shown "outstanding performances in the fields of science, business, culture and sports, and recommended by relevant ministers"...more...

I can see a couple of reasons they would suddenly be doing this...

One would be to "import" olympic athletes.

The other would be to allow ex-Koreans that could potentially win a high-profile award to retake (or not give up in the first place) Korean nationality. The case of Yoichiro Nambu and the 2008 physics Nobel Prize comes to mind...

Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
