Tokyo To Get Girls In The Koban

Postby Mulboyne » Wed Apr 01, 2009 11:36 am

[floatr]Image[/floatr]Kyodo: Tokyo police begin deploying female officers at police boxes
The Metropolitan Police Department began deploying female officers Wednesday at a "koban," a type of police box set up for community policing, on a full-time basis. A total of 20 female officers are posted at 10 koban, including those near JR Ikebukuro Station and a marine park in Daiba, Minato Ward, department officials said. The Tokyo police had avoided stationing female officers at koban, except during the day, as they would be exposed to risks of becoming crime victims given that many koban in Tokyo are located in entertainment and other crowded districts. All other prefectural police departments in Japan have already deployed females at koban. The MPD has made the latest decision in view of diversified needs at koban, including the need to take care of female crime victims and suspects. About 2,360 female officers work for the MPD, accounting for about 5 percent of the total. The MPD plans to deploy all female officers it will recruit in the future at koban, the officials said.

I can see where this will become very entertaining as soon as they begin doing the RBAG checks and catch Cap'tn Japan pedalling his way home from the neon sites...

They don't look very intimidating in that pic, someone tell me they are atleast armed.

By the way, I am not down with the whole acronym thing, what is RBAG?
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.

I don't get this.

If the Tokyo police are worried about female police officers being "exposed to risks of becoming crime victims...in entertainment and other crowded districts" what about female members of the general public? Are the police advising all females stay out of entertainment and other crowded districts at night?

I thought Japan was safety country or something.

That heinous offense of Riding Bicycle As Gaijin, which is an invitation for an immediate police investigation, checking the registration of the bike, your registration, a brief short arm inspection and an immense waste of time, winding up with (if everything checks out okay), how long you been in Japan and can you teach me some English? If something doesn't check out, your case will be publized in Debito's next blog.
