...when Sanya is just too damn expensive:

I go back to the US for a couple of weeks and, despite all the bad news, houses are still huge, Trader Joe's is cheap, and Alan Edward shoes can be had for under $100 if you look around a bit. Then I read this kind of news from Japan, a country which seems to have "fluoresced" during the postwar era, but is now rapidly regressing to the Asian mean of armies of coolies working in viciously exploitative sweatshops and sleeping in hovels. Grim.

I could see doing it for a few nights if you're a young backpacker but living there for an extended period would be rough. These places sound like death traps, btw. God forbid a fire breaks out at one.

Here, tenants squeeze their worldly possessions into a space measuring just 80 centimeters by 180 cm--even smaller than one tatami mat--for a monthly rent of 27,000 yen, including utilities, or 900 yen a day.
Each of the smallest rooms in this building, in the Asakusa district of Tokyo's Taito Ward, contains just enough space for the average adult to stretch out and sleep. The height of each compartment, located one above the other, is 90 cm.

Sorry not me, and I consider myself an average adult, maybe not an average Japanese adult, but. . .:wall:

True, but I know for a fact that two can fit in one as evidenced by a certain young thing bagged out of one of GJ's favorate haunts early one Saturday morn.....

yeah, the really do. my first thought was that 'video box' in osaka that burned down last year, that there was no way to escape once the fire started.

even as a backpacker i can't see trying those places out!
