Joseph Nye to Take A Seat of Next Japanese Ambassador

Postby Takechanpoo » Fri Jan 09, 2009 2:21 pm

[floatl]Image[/floatl]TOKYO (AFP)--U.S. President-elect Barack Obama plans to name influential academic Joseph Nye, best known for coining the phrase "soft power," as ambassador to Japan, a newspaper reported Thursday. The Asahi Shimbun, quoting unnamed sources in Washington, reported on its Web site that Obama wants to show commitment to the U.S.-Japan alliance by picking a high-profile ambassador well before taking office. In an opinion article last year, Nye wrote of a sense of "malaise" in relations between Tokyo and Washington, due in part to Japanese perceptions that the U.S. cared more about a rising China. Nye said the U.S. could make Japan "a much more equal and important ally" by focusing on soft power. He said Japan, officially a pacifist nation since the end of World War II, could join Washington in fighting new threats such as climate change and pandemics......

This means full-blown friendly relation between U.S and China starts while making famous scholar take a seat of Japanese ambassador to relieve and deceive brando-loving Japs.

It's official

Frankly, I'm surprised that no one on this board has pointed out that Nye is one of the chairmen of the Trilateral Comission.

Nye may be a scholar, but he's also a guy that all pre-W presidents, from either party, have turned to for advice.
I have a blog. Last update: August 18, 2013.

Not Nye

Calif. lawyer tapped as Tokyo envoy
Satoshi Ogawa / Yomiuri Shimbun Correspondent

WASHINGTON--U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday decided to nominate California attorney John Roos, who was active in raising funds for him during the presidential campaign, as ambassador to Japan, U.S. sources said.

Roos is the head of Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich & Rosati, a law firm in California's Silicon Valley. His imminent nomination comes in place of that of former Assistant Defense Secretary Joseph Nye, who is versed in Japan-U.S. relations and whose name had previously been raised in connection with the post.

...Roos, though knowledgeable about Japanese economy and culture, has little knowledge of the Japan-U.S. security relationship, the source added

I assume by being knowledgable he once owned a Sony Walkman and his daughter likes Pikachu. Certainly doesn't sound like a member of Obama's Asian A-team.

What...chlamydia?? trannies?? goats??

An article in the Asahi Shimbun even tends to be more harsh.

However, while Roos, 54, appears to have little or no connection to Japan, the sources said the last-minute decision to switch to Roos was based on his strong relationship with Obama.

...According to the law firm's website, his expertise includes corporate finance, corporate law and governance, and mergers and acquisitions. In his profile, he only lists Israel under "international experience" and has no entries under "languages."

Well, it's the old dilemma for the two countries. The ideal mix would be a Japan hand with the ear of the president. If you have to choose between those two qualities however, which would your prefer? A guy who knows how Tokyo works but has to sit in the corridor waiting for the President to see him or a guy who probably had to look up the name of the current Japanese Prime Minister but can take any major issue straight to the President by calling his mobile? If Roos fits the second description, there are benefits as well as drawbacks.

The question of whether he fits the second description is open isn't it? Afterall, he sounds more like a party bagman than an actual friend and party bagman are traditional as popular as doctors -you only talk to them when you absolutely have to.

No disrespect to anyone here, but I don't think anyone in Washington gives a shit about Japan or any other country. They don't even have to feign serious statesmanship anymore. Crass political patronage is what people expect, and what they accept as normal behavior now.
