Golden Week In September?

Postby Mulboyne » Sat May 30, 2009 4:14 pm

[floatl]Image[/floatl]With Golden Week travel plans disrupted by the outbreak of swine flu, the Asahi reports (Japanese) that many have decided to take advantage of a five-day holiday which crops up in September this year. Respect for the Aged day falls on Monday 21st and the Autumn Equinox on Wednesday 23rd. The Tuesday in between was declared a "bridge" national holiday, in keeping with the policy of trying to encourage people to make more effective use of their holiday time, so there's a full five day break available. The Asahi reports that travel agents have seen a flood of applications for local hotel bookings and anyone wanting flights to Okinawa or Hokkaido at that time is now being wait-listed.

I've learned that there is no such thing as a holiday or a golden week in Japan as all forms of public transportation will be flooded with people making it impossible to go anywhere. :(

Very true, I tried to go to Arashiyama outside of Kyoto, there were so many people I didn't get a chance to see any of the famous sights, just more and more people.
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.

Most Japanese are masochists with their lets see how many people we can cram into the elevator, cram into the train, and how many people can we cram onto the fuckin` highway so it takes 5 hours to go 60km. They dont just like it they get off on it.

I hate to say this, but why is it that everyone wants to do something on a so called national holiday where the whole country is off at the same time??
I just don't get it. I just stay at home and plan my holiday's around it. One has to be completely mad or either suicidal to want to even venture out during those days, Especially, now that ETC has that 1000yen to 50% off deals. You know full well, everyone will take FULL ADVANTAGE(except me:confused: )and why not?
Growing up in L.A., I learned on holidays"STAY AT HOME!"plan your get away around these days, unless you want to get caught up in that madness!

I usually do a 7-8 day vacation about five days before the GW rush starts and end up coming back to Tokyo in the middle of GW, which generally gives me about 2 weeks off and only forces me to burn about 6-7 days of my 14 "days of glorious freedom and hedonism" that work so generously provides.
Plus, generally four days before the first day of GW is the day that the airline fares increase...so cutting out of town a day before that means mo' money for me to help someone else's economy. Returning to Tokyo with suitcases stuffed with "contraband" and a nasty case of jet lag ready to turn me into a vegetable finds the trains relatively empty, although the next few days I suffer from the desire to set fire to the yanki idiots who are wandering around Shinjuku trying to act badass.
I was inspired by Lumine Est when it used to be called My City to regard that name as a message that, indeed, Shinjuku was "MY CITY, MOTHERFUCKER!"...
my surf, my waves, my beach, go home val!
