The scene above is from an NTV programme called "The Sunday NEXT". It shows chefs from Seikoen, a yakiniku restaurant in Ikebukuro, slapping meat on the floor to tenderize it. Japan's netizens immediately began to question whether this could be hygienic given that people were also walking on the floor with their shoes on. It transpires that the chefs usually tenderize the meat on a table and don't do it on the floor at all. However, the director of the segment asked them to do so, telling them it would make a better sound and have a stronger visual impact. Critics are angry that a broadcaster has once more been caught apparently faking scenes and are calling for an explanation and apology. Mind you, it's not clear why the chefs thought it was OK to be filmed pounding their meat on the floor. If the director had asked them to spit on it, I wonder if they would have done that too?
