Roppongi Club Busted For Private Dances

Postby Mulboyne » Tue Jun 16, 2009 2:10 pm

The manager of hostess club Climax in Roppongi has been arrested. Press reports are calling the place a "cabaret club for foreigners" and, in truth, that's pretty much what it was even though plenty of Japanese customers went there too. Specifically, the police say that the club offered "private dances" where a hostess would go topless in a curtained area of the club just behind Greji's usual table. This is in contravention of the laws governing such establishments which has resulted in the rest of five others alongside the manager. Looking at the books, police say that the club took 400 million yen over an eighteen month period. There are a couple of links to video reports of the arrest via this link.

This is the usual propaganda by Mulboyne. I swear that I have never ever been to that place at any time in the last week, or maybe week and a half, I think.

It is too remote of a location, seeing that it is almost 300 meters from my old office. I think it would be even closer to GJ and you know how he likes to dance...

Greji, are you looking for a new job, now, since your old one at Climax is kaput?

interesting story this one.

They've been "at it" for years, so why now? If it's 'For Foreigners, By Foreigners', then why are the police involved now?. Cui Bono?

Cynics will see this as the Mori brothers progressing their gentrification plans in the 6-trees, and asking for the police to lend a hand with a scorched-earth approach. Try and force out a few more tenants while the squeeze is on.

'The Max' will suffer badly for this, punters and their brokerage house sponsors have been avoiding the place recently and this will do nothing to stop the flight elsewhere.

The revenue numbers from the article look a bit sketchy at first glance, implies a fairly high run-rate; they have their quiet nights and over the past 18 months I would say many of the punters/sponsors have not had the rock-star nights in there that used to go on three or four years ago.

all the above thoughts gleaned from a conversation I heard in the pub, of course.

ZakZak suggests (Japanese) that the girls at Climax only started taking their bras off during private dances because foreign customers were spending less following the Lehman shock. A number of press reports attribute the Roppongi crackdown to the warning issued by the US Embassy about illegal clubs and bars in the area.

It's amusing to see some of the reports appearing to indicate that this kind of club, where private services are negotiable, is mainly a foreign phenomenon. Below is the inconspicuous building in another part of Tokyo which houses a well-known cabaret with virtually identical services and a primarily Japanese clientele. It has been there for 35 years and a police box is only about twenty yards away.

And I bet you that the Hinomaru never missed a payment in those 35 years.
