I doubt it will stick...

I mean it was a SMALL mirror... if it had been a large one, he'd be in the slammer for quite a while... but since it was small.. he just has to give an apology...

I have watched and read this guy for years. His work is good and he's quite funny on TV. He's featured all the time in Yomiuri as a "reformer". This ding-dong is gonna go down in flames over underwear seen everyday anyway. Sheesh.

I don't get peepers either. What's so exciting about peeping up someone's skirt just to get a glance of her knickers, which probably haven't been changed for a day or two. :shakeh: Oh well, takes all sorts I suppose.

This is why keitai cameras in Japan make an audible sound when an image is captured.. this feature is not able to be changed on camera phones sold in Japan - this is a mandatory requirement of all the carriers for the handset vendors.

Camera phones in other countries can have this sound disabled via the handset settings.

I think Korea is starting to go the mandatory sound route. One of my students has a phone that says "cheee-zuuu" hellishly loud before taking a pic.

I am impressed. Is it a law? It seems arcane and slightly nannying. What if you wanted to take a picture of something to use as evidence of malpractice? *Ga-ching*! and oops you're caught.

If you were taking a picture for evidence purposes, would you be using a keitai?

If you wanted to be inconspicuous ... whistleblowing and all that. Still that never was a popular pastime in Japan. I can imagine that taking upskirt snapshots would be far more likely to motivate bored businessmen into buying a camera keitai ...

Definitely. I think the likelihood is that many more people would take pics of stuff they shouldn't than use the phone to take pictures of "evidence". Better for the handset providers to err on the side of caution.

Kyodo via Japan Today: Economist fined Y500,000 for trying to look up girl's skirt
The Tokyo District Court on Wednesday ordered Kazuhide Uekusa, a well-known economist and once a regular guest on television programs, to pay a fine of 500,000 yen for attempting to look up the skirt of a high school student using a small mirror on an ascending escalator at JR Shinagawa Station in April last year.

Kyodo via Crisscross: Economist convicted of being 'peeping Tom' arrested in groping case
Economist Kazuhide Uekusa, once a regular guest on television programs, who was convicted for trying to look up a girl's skirt in 2004, has been arrested on suspicion of groping a 17-year-old female high school student on a train in Tokyo, police said Thursday. Uekusa, 45, a visiting professor of the graduate school of Nagoya University of Commerce & Business, allegedly put his hand up the girl's skirt and touched her body at around 10:10 p.m. on Wednesday between Shinagawa and Kamata stations on the Keihin Kyuko Line. Uekusa has denied the allegation, saying he has no memory of groping the girl as he was drunk. In April 2004, Uekusa was arrested for trying to look up a girl's skirt on an escalator of JR Shinagawa Station. He was a professor at Waseda University at the time. He was fined 500,000 yen and a small mirror he used in the crime was forfeited.

reading that interview form the PINK BOX thread

Shooting a fake train club in the middle of a typhoon. I had to go all the way to Kobe, and after several meetings, I finally got the OK to photograph the train. The day of the shoot, a typhoon hit. My connection, who was really excited about the photo project, had his guys to drive me through the typhoon anyway, paying $80 highway tolls to get me from Osaka to Kobe to shoot the train.

When we got there, the place was packed with customers seeking refuge from the typhoon.

makes me wonder if Uekusa was a regular customer who wanted the up the ante a little.

At times, celebrity economist Kazuhide Uekusa's sleight of hand was so adept it must have seemed he was doing it with mirrors. According to a conviction he received two years ago, he was actually doing it with mirrors. And the reason why it was added to his criminal record then was because the mirror was being slipped under a schoolgirl's skirt.

Image

http://mdn.mainichi-msn.co.jp/waiwai/face/news/20060922p2g00m0dm024000c.html

Despite vehemently denying the allegations against him, Uekusa had plenty of time for some constructive reflection as his career as a talking head came to an abrupt halt following his arrest. It was only recently that he was beginning to resurface in public. But the inside of schoolgirls' skirts has lured him into trouble again, and when he was arrested on Sept. 13 -- the third sex crime charge he has faced in the past eight years -- it was his hand that was going up there instead of a mirror.

"Uekusa's earlier claims that he had been framed actually carried a bit of weight. He paid the 500,000 yen fine handed down to him, but said he did so under duress. He insisted on his innocence and claimed he had been forced into making a confession," a reporter who has covered Uekusa's scandals tells Shukan Shincho. "This theory built up that he was being persecuted by the government and he got quite a bit of support."

But any backing he may have had all but disappeared on the fateful Sept. 13 ride on a Keihin Kyuko train when he was supposed to have fondled the buttocks of a second-year high school girl. Again, Uekusa is protesting his arrest and insists he is innocent. But those who came to his aid following his earlier arrest aren't as keen to get behind him now.

Celebrity economist pleads not guilty to molesting high school girl on train
Mainichi
Celebrity economist Kazuhide Uekusa pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to molesting a high school girl on a train in Tokyo in September.

"I swear by heaven that I never did such a thing. I'm confident that I'll be found not guilty," Uekusa, a former professor at a university post-graduate course, told the Tokyo District Court in his first hearing.

In the opening statement, a prosecutor disclosed that Uekusa admitted to the allegations during police questioning. "I created a nuisance to her. It's true I committed the act," the prosecutor quoted Uekusa as telling investigators.

Uekusa fondled the buttocks of a high school girl on a Keihin Railway train in Tokyo on the night of Sept. 13, according to the opening statement. After the victim told him to stop, two passengers overpowered him.

In March 2005, Uekusa was slapped with a 500,000 yen fine for using a hand mirror to look up the skirt of a high school girl at JR Shinagawa Station in downtown Tokyo in 2004. During the trial over the case, Uekusa pleaded not guilty to the charges. Nevertheless, he did not appeal the conviction to a higher court.

Dr. Uekusa-i sounds like a much more interesting guy than any of the tenured bureaucrats on my thesis committee. I'll read his memoirs if he ever decides to publish them!

He took his appeal all the way to the Supreme Court which has now upheld the original judgement. Benjamin Fulford still maintains Uekusa was unfairly smeared because he opposed Koizumi's privatization policies.

With the Supreme Court ruling, it's certain Uekusa unfairly smeared someone's privates at least.
