Yes that's Mas Oyama doing the bottle cut. A lot of people thought it was hooey but I actually saw him do it live back in the day with six Kirin beer bottles. Snapped the necks off clean as a whistle.

Ahh, brings back some old memories. I met him once before when he was doing a book promotional for one of his instructional books. I also saw the photo series, but would have like to been there in person when he fought the live bull with karate, which was a bit unfair as the bull didn't have a black belt...Of course tree hugging rules wouldn't let you do that these days.

Actually he was pretty upfront about too. He brought several of his Korean relations over and had them working at several of his 'side business' establishments.

It was the TV and manga business that sort of played his Korean background down.

It would have been interesting if he and Geesink had fought. Although I met Bluming, i never had the opportunity to play with him. He was in later years to fall out with the Kodokan as too was Inokuma for his Australian caper.

I did have an opportunity to randori with Anton a couple of times during one of his sessions at Meiji with Kaminaga. That's a part of my life I'd like to forget and I'm sure it would give Iraira an S/M stiffy to hear about the damage administered to my poor tender bod...

I went a few rounds with Wim Ruska at the Kodokan - circa '76-77. Think King Kong meets Mr. Bean. Felt like that old joke about J L Sullivan 'look son , if you hit me and I find out about it'

Sadly he suffered a major stroke back in 2001 and is now very disabled

Steve, ran across this, which might interest you. Oyama and Bluming in the early 50's....

Very nice.

Here's one of Bluming that really tops them all.

Jon Bluming together with my teacher Kuroda Ichitaro and Donn Draeger been given an special award by the Tokyo Metropolitan police for stopping a street robbery by two punks (bet they got the shock of their lives)

When I first ran across Donn, he was a major in the USMC and it was like he was stationed at the Kodokan for years. How? I have no idea. I guess he eventually left the crouch and his primary concern was to see that the world did not run out of Judo training and conditioning books (he wrote a bunch of them). All of a sudden in the late 60's or early 70's, he just more or less, dropped below the horizon. I never really heard much of him again here in Japan. I don't know if he continued in Judo or martial arts in the states, but no one ever talked much about him after that.

He did a few other things. Sadly passed at the age of 60.

Following some of the links above, I learned a little about Wang Shu Jin who seems like he was a fairly remarkable man.

I've always liked Kyokushin because unlike a lot of other kinds of martial arts there are no secrets or mysticism involved. Kyokushin guys are tough because they train hard and actually fight. However, I do think some of the shit like Oyama killing bulls was, if not totally fake, set up to make it less dangerous. If you put him in a random field with the biggest baddest bull around and nothing but his hands to defend himself, there's no way he'd be karate chopping horns off or killing it with one shot to the head.

Well hey just hold on a minute there pilgrim (John Wayne voice) when ya talking man versus animal then we all know ya gotta go with the best....

Project Grizzly

Image

The film documents Hurtubise's diligent work to improve his homemade "grizzly-proof" suit of armour, his efforts to test its resilience, and his forays into the Rockies to track down the grizzlies he dreams of meeting. The film manages to capture the humor of the project as well as its sincerity. It is directed by Peter Lynch and produced by Michael Allder.
