Get Sweaty On The Cool Biz Train

Postby Mulboyne » Sat Aug 01, 2009 10:01 pm

Tokyu Rail has announced it will run Cool Biz carriages on the Toyoko line which runs between Shibuya and Yokohama during the month of August. The basic difference is that the air conditioning will be set a couple of degrees higher which you are expected to offset by dressing down as recommended by Cool Biz guidelines drawn up by the "Team Minus 6%" group of the Environment Ministry. Evidently, Tokyu has realized that it might not be a smart idea to raise the temperature in rush hour trains so this policy will operate between 10:00am and 4:00pm. Two models from Popteen magazine joined the presentation at Shibuya Station if you are wondering who they are.

It's the same concept that brought failing restaurants back to profitability...cut out all that free ocha and those oshibori...that's where the fat was!

I hate it when Japanese always try to feed me the line that AC is NOT good for you. I remember last year it was so cold about minus 1 celsius and one of my friends gave me a ride home after work.
I noticed that during our hour drive, she didn't turn on the AC. It was so cold, I could've sworn I saw some polar bears in her backseat. I asked her why she didn't want to turn on the AC and she replied, "it's not good for the environment" so freezing is better, I said. Her response to that was: "we all need to be patient in life, it builds character." WTF??
So, I guess the most important thing is that we all stay GREEN it's more important than overall comfort.

That's confusing. Are you saying that at "1 celsius" outside she didn't turn on the heat in her car?
The heat in cars is free; that is, heat is a waste by-product of an internal combustion engine.
Was she driving a home-made all electric prototype?

It's interesting with the heat thing, though...

I used to ski with some guys from a company class I was teaching. We drove up to the mountains every weekend in one of their cars. He didn't use the heat either, claiming that the draw on the electric system slighly reduced his fuel economy. Never used the highway, but had an eleborate route of the old country backroads to avoid paying any highway tolls. They'd all rather wake up and start out at 4 a.m. than split the 2-3000 yen between four guys. I happily started leaving a couple hours later for the hills with a foreign friend who was all too happy to put on the heat and use the highway to shave a couple hours off the drive time.

Me thinks someone has been in Japan so long he's started following the locals' habit of refering to the whole heating and cooling system as air conditioning.

You also have to remember that this year's summer is relatively cool compared to others so turning down (or up or whatever) 1 degree on these tin-can-Tokyu-trains won't really affect anything. No summer blackouts this year either.

No, it was a Mazda "Demio" and besides, if I would have tried to explain all that to her, she would have never understood my point, to her it was a waste and no debate about it.
So I just kept my cold thoughts to myself and grit my teeth and prayed that I get to my destination ASAP before I would turn into an ice block!

I think what he is trying to say is that your friend probably saw/heard it on J-TV and took it as gospel.
