Straits Times: Granny, 88, choked on mochi
AN 88-YEAR-OLD woman died about an hour after choking on a piece of Japanese glutinous snack, a coroner's court heard on Tuesday. Madam Tay Ah Chu was at her home in Jalan Bahagia on May 2 when her daughter, Ms Lim Geok Eng, 45, gave her a piece of Japanese mochi. Shortly later, Madam Tay was coughing and gasping for air. On seeing this, her grand-daughter and maid alerted Ms Lim who was in her room then. Ms Lim rushed out and saw her mother slouching on the sofa with her mouth opened. She then tried to remove the food from her mother's mouth. After calling the police, Madam Tay's granddaughter rushed to a clinic at the void deck but it was closed. She then contacted her sister who taught her how to perform first aid to remove the food. Despite her effort, she could not force the food out from her grandmother. Paramedics arrived and tried to resuscitate Madam Tay who remained unresponsive. Eventually, one of them inserted his finger into her mouth and managed to remove some greenish food. Madam Tay was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead. State Coroner Victor Yeo recorded a verdict of misadventure on her death.
