I think in this atmosphere of increased stupidity that gaijin should be more aware of what their rights are regarding searches, etc. Technically, the cops can`t ask for your ID unless you appear to be doing something illegal.

In many ways, I'd reckon fighting fascist police in Italy is preferable to fighting Japanese bureaucracy. There is no such thing as common sense here and people never, ever admit that they make mistakes.

So true, so true. And the police are useless to foreigners here. A gaijin friend of mine was attacked by a Japanese punk kid and just barely got out of there without injury. When he reported it to the police, they didn't do anything for him at all. Later, they found out who the punk was and told me friend, "here's his address; go handle it yourself if you want." Is that some unbelievable bullshit or what?

So, if your friend took the address and beat the hell out of the kid, would he be arrested? I mean, the police told him to deal with it.
