I'm not quite as bleak on the US's future; I think it'll bottom around November. Maybe start to pick up a year from now.. I don't think it'll be a U-shaped recovery, or the dismal L-shaped. Maybe more like a stretched check-mark recovery. ;)

But I do think the US will lose it's hegemony; the innovation from immigrants we've been riding for the last 40 years will wane - they'll have equivalent options in their home countries. And their might even be a brain-drain from the US by it's own citizens.. But the US has space and resources; it'll do fine in the long run.. I'd stay away from the cities though. ;)

Did I mention I probably don't know what I'm talking about? :p

Well that makes you equal with everyone else -- and I do mean everyone.

(That's both scary and comforting at the same time.)

Dollar crashing from 99 Yen to 94 in one day....bad Omen for the markets. I wonder if this could be the start of it?

Sorry to disappoint but it looks like a bit of market panic in response to what Nottu mentioned above.

It recovered back to 96yen, what happens from now depends on how much money other central banks start pumping out now that the fed has started the pattern.

Back in December I thought there was a chance I could end up spending some time living in my island cottage if things got really, really bad. I don't think that is going to happen now, and I have noticed that people in the US and Europe are starting to spend a bit of money again (I export high-value non-necessary items). Things aren't going to be 1997-like again anytime too soon but we're not facing down an impending financial Armageddon either.
