I just noticed that a number of the Japanese victims are from Unzen.

This would seem to me to be a rather cruel twist of fate. Unzen, as a few old timers might remember suffered a devastating volcanic eruption and pyroclastic flow that resulted in the deaths of 44 people in 1991. At that time, all of the of the shooting range fire victims would have been attending the local high school and probably would have had to have been evacuated to save them from well... death by fire.

As I recall they brought a bunch of those students out to Western Tokyo (Itsukaichi) to attend school during that blow! Wonder if any of those guys were on this class get-together?
