[floatl]Image[/floatl]Voice of America: Japanese Child Poverty on the Rise
Child poverty in Japan is increasing at a surprising rate. That is the assessment from a senior government researcher studying the country's economic decline. Aya Abe says 15 percent of Japanese children live in poverty and the government is not doing enough to help them. Poverty is not first thing that comes to mind when you think of Japan. After all, there are no children begging on the streets in major cities here. You do not often see Japanese citizens publicly venting their frustrations over the country's economic decline. But senior government researcher Aya Abe says Japan has the fourth-highest rate of poverty among developed countries. She says she sees that poverty in schools where students admit to only bathing once a week. Some cannot afford to buy pencils for class. "They may not be on the streets begging or they may not be turning into criminals, but it's there. It's just that we have to open our eyes and see," Abe said...more...

"Shine those fine shoes of yers! Clean as a whistle, gov'ner!"

At the risk of revealing my inner obaachan, I've go to say that's one of the cutest pics I've ever seen.
"If there's a river, we'll dam it, and if there's a tree, we'll ram it - 'cause we Japanese are talkin' progress!"

I realised the other day that while there is a decrease in the birth-rate in Japan, the pikies ( guys with orange mullets and loud women with deep-fried hair and sparkly sweaters ) always seem to have loads of kids.

The rich get richer, and the poor get children.

Yup, it's not just the declining birth rate, what we really need is to know the birth rate of productive members of society compared to the birth rate of future Jr. High dropouts

Oh well, at least prostitutes will be cheaper in the future due to the law of supply and demand.

If I'm gonna stay in Japan, they better start setting up some "gated communities" for us non-criminals, or proper walled-off ghettoes for the growing underclass. :devil2:

BTW, what is the "poverty" rate in Japan.
Is it the kind of poverty where you have 3 meals a day, and have to get by with only a Nintendo DS, rather than the new Nintendo DSi? Or is it the no clothes living in the park poverty? I suspect it's the former.

AFAIK the "poverty" line is usually defined by people who make a living by "fighting poverty" but never succeeding. Funny that.

See good in bad, I always say.
Plus, even if they do set up "gated communities", do you seriously think they are going to be foreigner friendly?
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.
