Stampede in Harajuku

The picture above is of Takeshita Dori in Harajuku on Friday afternoon. There is also a short video clip here which shows the heavy congestion turning into a panic. A rumour spread around 4:20pm that a famous celebrity was nearby. the message was fuelled by mobile phones and social networking services and the build up of people seemed to confirm that something was happening. In fact, it seems there was no-one around but the crush of people in the narrow street meant that no-one could move and a panic began. Dozens of police were needed to restore order and ambulances took three people to hospital although there are no details of injuries so far.

No names have been mentioned in press reports so it's unclear whether there was a specific rumour or something generic.

Chrysanthemums are only happy if they are all at the same place at the same time.

I was there right before the shit hit the fan. I wanted to enjoy some all you can eat Barbacoa, and on the way there it was crowded but not so bad, and I mentioned in jest to my friend how all the small people just try to push they way around, when we could just plow through the whole crowd if we felt like it. Turned out we ended up have to do that to get back to the station. That was around 3pm, I guess that stampede went down around 5. I am glad I got out of there in time.
