Late payment or non-payment of wages is a legitimate grievance but complaining about the system of fines is less understandable. Penalties for coming to work late or for not meeting dohan quotas aren't designed to nickel and dime the hostesses, they are there to weed out the girls who can't cut it.

You seem to know a lot about the trade for a guy who claims only to hang out at Aka-chochin's......

A lot of these places won't pay the last month's wages when a girl quits. Of course if someone shows up late you can dock their pay for the time they aren't there. However, it's not fair to deduct a large pecentage of a day's pay for coming 10 mins late.

As for the dohan quotas, it probably depends on how the payment system is set up. If it's commission or bonus based then of course you can pay less to those who don't meet a certain quota. However, if pay is an agreed upon wage or salary, I don't believe you are allowed to punish an employee financially for non-performance under Japanese law.

That's sort of like eikaiwa that refuse to pay teachers that don't give three months' notice when they quit. The law only requires two weeks' notice for non-managers and even if you don't give it, it's still not legal for a company to withhold pay. What they can do is sue you for damages after the fact if they think it's worth their while.

One way these girls get screwed is by the money they have to pay to the club's hairstylist everyday and the money they have to pay for the ride home since they get off after last train. If you're working in a highclass Ginza club making serious dough you probably don't care but for the average kyabajo it can add up.

Hmm, this is wierd... first off, the large majority of kyabakura dont actually employee the hostesses - they hire them through outsourcing companies. This allows them to treat the hostesses as independent contractors and avoid the bullshit with actually hiring someone. it reminds me alot of SF in the 90's when the strippers at Market Street Cinema and Lusty Lady threatened to 'strike'. Through some technicalities it WAS determined that the girls were 'employed' since they had to abide by certain constraints such as scheduled in advance, company uniform [sic] , etc.

My guess, is, like SF, this movement is being led a by a couple of jilted radical lesbian strippers who are seeing mroe into the equation than just being lucky to get some scratch for their crack by any other means. As far as I know, Jonathan's, Lawsons , etc have many openings. So what's their bitch? Grind some cheese and don't complain!!
See you in PyonPyang!

Sorry if all these Japanese language videos are frustrating for those of you short on language skills but here's another one which illustrates the original story:

They held a demo on Friday which is said to have attracted 150 participants although photographs of the event show the same half dozen people:
