Where Rudolph lives in the off season

In Nara, Japan, the deer know their place: everywhere

Reporting from Nara, Japan - One of the great side benefits of visiting Japan is the food, especially the sushi and sashimi. But for those travelers willing to go the extra mile, there is a little-known city where visitors go to feed the locals rather than to dine among them.

The city of Nara lies south of Kyoto, less than two hours from Tokyo by train, but to travel here is to journey back in time....more...

The author of the story in the LA Times is a guy by the name of James Dorsey. According to his website
He is a throwback to a bygone era of exploration and adventure, traveling to places where tourists do not go and doing what others are afraid to do. His stories and photos take the reader along for the ride.

That's why he went to Nara: "where tourists do not go and doing what others are afraid to do."

Those deer are pretty vicious you know!

I guess he can be forgiven for not knowing that Nara is a major tourist spot now that the most popular tourist locations for foreigners are Roppongi Hills, the Tsukiji fish market, and the Shibuya scramble crossing.

How times change ...

I think the guy is just saying it is little known to people who know almost nothing about Japan, even before I came here, I didn't know much about Nara. Since most Westerners only travel into Tokyo, it doesn't make much sense for them to travel all the way to Nara, but for those who are traveling around Japan, the Osaka-Nara-Kyoto 3-day vacation is my idea of a good long weekend.
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.

I would bet 90% of Americans have never heard of it but to make it sound like it's an off-the-beaten-path adventure if fucking bullshit. Those deer can get pretty nasty when you're slow with the senbei though.

If you want to have some fun with friends slip some senbei into their back pockets without them knowing....

I hate to bear bait Greji like this, but the first time I went to Nara I was trying to pose for a picture with a deer just as it was taking the senbei from my hands. I held back for a second while my friend set the shot up. The deer couldn't wait though and started biting at my fly. Luckily I had baggy pants on.

Greji refuses to rise to the bait; however, does leave immediately for Nara with shopping bag full of sembei and boxes of tissue
