A typhoon gusting up to 144 kilometres (90 miles) per hour swirled towards Japan's southernmost island chain on Thursday, grounding flights and causing blackouts.

POWERFUL typhoon Etau roared over Japan's main island today, leaving at least six people dead or missing and 57 others injured while snarling airline and rail traffic.
The eye of the typhoon, which packed gusts of up to 108kph, was near the city of Toyama, 250km north-west of Tokyo, at noon local time (1pm AEST), the Meteorological Agency said.
