I think the main reason is J-women didn't know he had moved to Madrid. In their heads Madrid=Spain and Beckham=England and Vodaphone, so they probably didn't even realise he was playing.

I work near the stadium and people were lining up from lunchtime. Then the heavens opened and there were alot of soggy fans carrying their new Milan Beckham shirts.. but at one stage the t-shirt sellers outnumbered the fans.
