Up in Smoke

Postby Mike Oxlong » Fri Jul 23, 2010 12:12 am

Looks like smokes are gonna cost more soon...

Philip Morris Seeks Cigarette Price Hikes In Japan

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Philip Morris Japan KK said Thursday it has asked the Ministry of Finance to approve its plan to increase the prices of 76 cigarette products, in line with a tobacco tax hike taking effect in October.

If approved, the higher prices would kick in Oct. 1.

Philip Morris Japan, the No. 2 player in the nation's tobacco market after Japan Tobacco Inc. (2914), plans to raise prices by 110-120 yen a pack. Its popular Marlboro brand will sell for 440 yen a pack, up from 320 yen, while Lark smokers will have to shell out 410 yen for a pack instead of the 300 yen they have been paying.

The additional tax amounts to 3.5 yen per cigarette, or 70 yen for a standard pack of 20. With sales expected to decline after the tax increase, Philip Morris aims to maintain revenue through aggressive price hikes.

Good news for me either way.

More people quit - less stink to put up with.
Nobody quits - I own stock in PM and RJR.
I have a blog. Last update: August 18, 2013.

Still cheap if you ask me. A pack of cigarettes in Washington state is at least $7.00:smoking:

Raising the taxes more might be a good way to help deal with the country's debt and get more people to quit. Both good things.

your awsome! winner each way.

I wonder if that "tax" will actually be used for what it's "taxed for" I know in USA it is used for medical research, etc.

But I bet it will go to the royal family for their pleasings.

Dose any of the "royal family" smoke? (tabacco)

No idea, but Masako would probably benefit from a bit of MJ now and then...

Maybe it's the fact she can't get any now that is the source of her woes.

I do like the fact that more and more establishments are tightening the noose on smokers all over Japan, when I first came here 13 years ago, people were smoking like Chimneys, it was horrible, especially when you're eating a nice meal and some bastard sits right next to you and lights up! Ughhhhh! But I always made sure to "politely" ask them to put it out and of course, they always did.
