Big PR-like news piece on the Grutt pass in the Asahi:

Museums discover law of supply and demand
... Expensive, esoteric and exhausting--Japanese museums are now trying to change such negative images. Some have introduced admission-free days, curators' or artists' talks; others have installed more sofas to make exhibition rooms cozier.

According to the latest report compiled for the Independent Administrative Institution National Museum of Art, the entity that operates national art museums in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, the number of people who visited only the permanent exhibitions of these museums in fiscal 2005 decreased by about 4.2 percent or 11,035, to 254,694 from the previous year. One reason for the decrease, the report says, is because "museum-goers in Japan tend to visit museums for special exhibits rather than permanent ones."

One quick way to motivate more people to visit museums may be shaving admission fees, as Yoshida's experience with the "Grutt Pass" shows...

I thought I would just bring up this thread again for some who may have missed it. Looked like they have increased to 70 facilities.

Sale for this 2 months valid pass is from 1st April - 31st of Jan only. (Am I right to say that which means if a tourist reach here only in the month of Feb or Mar, they won't be able to enjoy this privelledge?)

Anyway, here's the links:
