Your Landing Today Was Brought to You by a Local School

ABC: School kids direct Japanese air traffic
A group of air traffic controllers in Japan has been disciplined for letting high school students on a study tour radio instructions to pilots. The students were on an excursion at Fukuoka Airport in southern Japan last week when air traffic controllers offered them the opportunity to instruct pilots approaching the runway. The students were handed messages which they then radioed to the pilots. Afterwards, the air controllers told the students to keep the experience to themselves. But one of the teenagers boasted about what happened at a school talk and three controllers have now been reprimanded by Japan's transport ministry.

It wasn't the first time something like this ever happened.

What a big fucking deal. Fukuoka is not that busy these days and all they probably said was "XYZ 123, cleared to land runway XX" after the controller told them to and made sure everything was OK.

Those kids had the time of his lives, the flight crew and everyone else on frequency probably got a good chuckle out of it and everything was fine. Same for that kid at JFK.

I wish people would lighten up. There's much bigger problems in aviation the media is blissfully ignoring.

I agree Tsuru... What these articles fail to mention is traffic opperations at the time, and any traffic controller (good or bad, though even the bad are usually bloody good).

I'd get a chuckle if one day over the radio I end up on approach with a 12 year old telling me which runway to line up for landing on... Though I'll settle for the hot sounding girl who's usually there on the weekends in my home city. ^_^

Tsuru's right on as usual. If I was turning final and calling Itazuke Tower, I wouldn't mind the kids, but one of the old hotties from the Standbar Hakata wouldn't hurt.....

The sad truth is... we never see them (or seldom do, I plan to visit the tower sometime soon since I have clearance anyway)... but if it's anything like the car auctions in Japan I'd rather have the memory over the reality...

Maybe this suggests that the flight controller job is such a soft cakewalk that even kids can do it without any training.

I've finished my MS Flight Sim X course, I think I'm ready for the influx of new passengers @ Haneda. :bounce:

Try a spot of approach vectoring if you think it's that easy :D
