Tokyo FG's Cause Pechakucha Craze

Hate Long, Rambling Speeches? Try Pecha-Kucha*

It's the bane of students, business people and even the military: If you've ever yawned through a slideshow, you're probably familiar with that dreaded malady of modern times, known as "Death by PowerPoint."

Now, for the long-suffering audience, there's some good news. Tokyo architects Mark Dytham and Astrid Klein hit on the antidote to presentation overload — a style they dubbed pecha-kucha, Japanese for "chitchat" — and their elegant solution is taking the world by storm. ....

"The problem with architects is they talk too much. So how could we find a way to stop them? You get passionate about whatever you're talking about and you go on forever and ever — so we came up with 20 slides, 20 seconds a slide," he says. He says 10 slides, 10 seconds per slide was too short and 30 slides, 30 seconds per slide was too long. ....

"We were looking for a name, and somebody says, 'It's just chitchat, it's pecha-kucha, pecha-kucha, pecha-kucha — people talking too much. So that's where we came up with pecha-kucha," she says.

Pecha-Kucha Goes Viral

At first, pecha-kucha (pronounced: peh-CHAKH-cha) was purely local. But then, something strange happened. Without any prompting or publicity, and to the astonishment of its founders, the format went viral.

In just the past three years, the speech events have taken root in hundreds of cities in the U.S. and worldwide, from Amersfoort, Netherlands, to Saragossa, Spain. New cities are added, on average, every 72 hours. Nearly a quarter of a million people every year gather in warehouses, old prisons and forest clearings for pecha-kucha nights — a spectacle that seems to belie the pretenses of the online age. ...

i've been to the events in dubai. pretty weird, and they haven't got the art of being able to say it all in their alloted time, but it's still pretty interesting. can't see it becoming a craze with as much staying power as something like karaoke though.

I've been in Japan long enough to know this hasn't got a hope of working with the locals....Being Japan, they have frigging meetings for everything, nothing is decided (except the timing of the next meeting) and there's almost always a boring old fart whose aisatsu drags on endlessly with loads of bullshite "degozaimasus" and "moshi agemasus."
I can just see some old geezer given a maximum of however many minutes at 20 seconds a slide letting the slides roll on regardless of what the fuck he's saying and speaking endless bullshite until he's had his fill of speaking.
If I ever become God, the first thing I do after making it illegal for women with decent bodies to wear clothes will be to ban Japanese from making speeches, although in the interests of freedom of speech, I will give anyone who wants it the option of being stuck into a room full of mirrors and loudspeakers and allow them to give speeches where their words are blared back at them and then force them to remain in there speaking until they promise they'll never give another speech again. After that comes the prohibition of meetings.

These events have been going on for years with no end in sight to their popularity. They did the smart thing early on by making everything connected with live streaming of the events, mobile phone apps, web, sns the whole shebang. They got the guerrilla marketing right and it has now reached a critical mass on the global scene. They describe it as rather than on-line SNS it is person to person SNS.

Mark Dytham is a smart guy and is a long time drinking buddy of mine.

If there's alcohol on offer, I don't think he's too fussy who else is around. I ended up with him in Shibuya until late morning just before FGs gathered in Yoyogi Park to meet sillygirl.
