I just got this update email from Delta SkyMiles:

Temporary Service Changes: DTW-HND, LAX-HND
Last Updated: March 17, 2011, 12am EST

Service will be temporarily suspended between Detroit (DTW) and Tokyo's Haneda (HND) airport, and between Los Angeles (LAX) and Tokyo-Haneda (HND) in order to maximize operational efficiency in the wake of recent events in Japan. Flights to and from our Tokyo-Narita hub continue to operate as normal and customers booked to and from Haneda during the temporary suspension will be reaccommodated to Narita or may request refunds.

Rescheduling Flights
If you are scheduled to travel between Detroit or Los Angeles and Tokyo-Haneda on Delta, Delta Connection®, or Delta-coded flights during the specified time periods listed below, you may choose to make a one-time change to your ticket without a change fee, or you may request a full refund.

You can now edit your itinerary here at delta.com, or you may contact Reservation Sales to make changes to your itinerary. See Conditions & Restrictions below.

Route Last Flight
West-bound Last Flight
East-bound Current Restart Date
West-bound/East-bound

DTW-HND Mar 20, 2011 Mar 23, 2011 May 31, 2011 / Jun 3, 2011

Conditions & Restrictions
Changes to origins and destinations (outside of Tokyo) may result in an increase in fare. Any difference in fare between your original ticket and the new ticket will be collected at the time of booking.

Haneda is a 1,000 yen taxi ride from my home

Postby Taro Toporific » Sat Mar 19, 2011 6:09 pm

After digging around, I found that Hawaiian Air has many half empty flights right now for Haneda to LAX (R/T) for $1,800 USD tomorrow and well under $1,000 (R/T) later next week.

(Flying from LA to Haneda normally costs much less than flying from Haneda to LAX, but Hawaiian Air doesn't seem to charge much extra for their flights originating from Haneda. Other airlines originating from Haneda going to the US cost 30-50% more than a Narita flight.)

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

Postby L S » Fri Apr 01, 2011 12:44 pm

The Good
Hawaiian Airlines said Thursday it'll keep its full schedule of flights to Japan, even though it has seen some decline in traffic since the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. source

The Bad
American Airlines is suspending two of its six daily flights to Japan next week due to a slump in traffic since the big earthquake and tsunami. source

The Ugly
AMR Corp.'s American Airlines and Japan Airlines Corp. will formally launch a trans-Pacific alliance on Friday, amid a sharp downturn in the Japan travel industry caused by the earthquake and tsunami. source

Yep, I just got hit with this too. Decided to fly out of Haneda for the first time on March 19th, heading round trip to DC through Detroit. Planned months in advance. Delta changed my departure to be from Narita instead of Haneda the day before my flight, did not even notify me. Got them to change departure to back to Haneda, but had to come back through Narita.

I guess I wlil switch back to United and Narita, better planes and service anyways IMHO.
