With China having like, what, six times the population of Japan, and an even more staggering imbalance in land mass and natural resources, it ought to be embarrassing to only now just be catching up.

They are playing the capitalist game by the book, and are the best for now...
they are already on their way to slow down because of the huge rise in living standards and salaries.
Frack... they even started ordering the shutdown of factories that are not considered energy efficient enough...

The short answer: no. China is plowing its new-found wealth into its military without the existence of any major adversary. Some Chinese nutjobs even fear Taiwan attacking China despite Taiwan having a primarily defensive military. And those of us in China are well aware of the PRC's stance on what it refers to as the "rebellious province" of Taiwan.

They are playing the capitalist game by the book, and are the best for now...

I say this with personal experience as well, both 1) having to use a VPN service to get past the Great Chinese Firewall and 2) being lucky enough as a "continuing student" to avoid the "Marxist-Leninist Theory" class, required of all students regardless of major, on my course schedule at a Chinese uni.
