I must be slipping, hadn't heard that one yet.

Say it isn't so! All this time I had assumed those guys were overworked sararimen pooped out from all the sabisu-zangyo (unpaid overtime) they have to put in...

Is alcoholism even recognized in Japan other than as a joke or badge of honor? But seriously, how many of us would be here if it wasn't for the lax attitude towards being a drunk? Let's hope that doesn't change. Otherwise I might have to move to Korea or Russia or someshit.

Reminds me of the old Charisma Man strip where Charisma Man gets wild after a bender on the turps at the Friday night company party.

He goes on a guilt trip and then has the Western women greet him on Monday morning by saying that the boss wants to see him immediately.

Charisma Man is shitting his pants, preparing himself for the sack and walks into the boss's office.

His employer greets Charisma Man with a shit-eating grin and says, "You are strong at drink!"

I've noticed if I keep at the local's pace, I should be OK the next day.
I broke a mirror this morning, which means I should be getting 7 years of bad luck - but my lawyer says he can get me 5.

Like everything here it's a pendulum. Right now we are at one extreme where anything goes. One day some busybody will decide that's "not ok" and the pendulum will rapidly swing to the other extreme. Expect strict public intoxication laws and open container laws, probably combined with limits on serving inebriated customers in bars/restaurants. It's gonna suck ass.

Smokers are seeing this pendulum swing now. A number of years ago you could smoke pretty much anywhere and cigs were dirt cheap. Now taxes are going up and more and more places are non-smoking. Expect this to be extended to restaurants and then bars and eventually end up being stricter than most places in the west.

Has drinking ever been frowned upon before in Japan?

That's when I get the fuck out. One thing I hate about the US is the fact that I can't have a cold beer in most parks or at most beaches on a hot summer day. BBQs in public parks without any booze are a very sad thing :(

I hate cigs and don't like the fact that my clothes and hair smell like smoke after a night on the town. However, I really don't like the way things are going in a lot countries. NYC is starting to look like Singapore. I think the only place you can still smoke is your home or your car. It also sucks that I can no longer have a cigar with a glass of port after a nice dinner at a steak house. People should at least be able to smoke in bars, night clubs and designated rooms at restaurants.

Yeah, I agree for sure. Unfortunately with the changes we are seeing now it is just a matter of time -- hopefully still quite a long time but who knows. Once things actually get rolling in Japan change can be surprisingly fast.

Yeah, I would be happy to get home at night without reeking like an ashtray too. The problem is that it's a slippery slope. Once one thing gets banned everyone wants their pet peeve banned too and soon you end up with a nanny state.

This is very embarrassing. I hope the cops bust their asses and lock 'em all up. With all the videos around I expect a good number of arrests.

Yep, unfortunately getting smoked in a home game and losing the Stanley Cup was too much for some Vancouverites (a repeat of 1994 it seems).
But hang on, did anyone notice the guy in the Canucks jersey doing pushups on the road (bottom left) - WTF?

Oh, for heaven's sakes, how very disappointed those unfortunate Vancouverites must be, eh?! They were so very excited earlier this month when I was there. Why, it was all they could talk aboot! Well, that, and a gentleman and his young lady friend were driving in lovely Stanley Park, and they picked up a hitchhiking fellow, and heavens if it didn't turn out to be the famous musician who goes by the name "Bono." The driver - he was quite surprised at picking up such a famous passenger! - and his friend were rewarded for their kindness with free tickets to a Vancouver U2 concert. Not too shabby, eh!
