The Okinawa Times reports (Japanese) that the families of two boys involved in robbing a 57 year old taxi driver have reached an out-of-court settlement and paid compensation. Interestingly, there were actually three boys involved in the incident but the third left for the US and his family were not involved in the deal. The driver's lawyers still want to reach a settlement with them also but no negotiations are taking place. The military have been in touch with the family to pass on the request but have advised the lawyers that they cannot compel the family to respond. The driver is quoted in the piece saying that the mother of one of the boys gave him the old stinkeye during the final meeting which he thought was out of order. He says he is still wary of picking up foreign kids even though it's over a year since the robbery.
