Yomiuri: Liquor tax hike may top up recovery fund
The government is considering raising the liquor tax and utility fees for cell phone service providers to help cover the colossal expense of reconstruction from the Great East Japan Earthquake, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned. Cabinet members concerned with tax and reconstruction affairs will meet by the end of the week to discuss the feasibility of the planned increases, according to government sources. The cost of reconstructing areas ravaged by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami is expected to exceed 10 trillion yen. A large chunk of the required funds will likely be raised by increasing mainstay taxes such as the income and corporate taxes.
