Whatever Happened To The Guardian Angels In Japan?

Postby Mulboyne » Fri Mar 30, 2007 1:36 am

[floatr]Image[/floatr]The Yokohama chapter of the Guardian Angels announced recently that they have been given a new patrol van by a group of businesses and local associations. Not earth-shattering news but it made me curious about the current state of the organization since I haven't noticed them around much. It seems they are faring very well. This is from the Wiki entry:

"A local organisation of the Guardian Angels was formed in Japan in 1996...Official acceptance culminated with a meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi in 2005. The Guardian Angels were the first community organization in Japan to ever be awarded non-profit status."

I must have been asleep when this photo-opportunity took place. Taro didn't miss it.

The US Angels website lists 29 local Japanese chapters. Their own website also has an English version, which is a little dated, but the Japanese version suggests they have around 500 active members nationwide. The success in Japan is really down to the efforts of Keiji Oda who was with the Angels in New York but was inspired by the tragedy of the Kobe earthquake to encourage volunteerism in Japan. The idea of a US volunteer corps, designed to counter chronic inner city crime, catching on in Japan may seem odd. However, Japan has a long history of civic groups patrolling the streets, clearing away litter and promoting road safety so the Angels sensibly aligned themselves with that tradition. Oda believes that there are around 26,000 local groups around the country involved in some form of crime prevention activity.

I saw these guys (and girls) once in Osaka, tackling the midosuji in shinsaibashi. No mean feat. There were about twelve of them, all in fatigues and berets. Their mission? Telephones. More specifically, public telephones with stickers of call girls plastered all over the glass walls. When they were on the march they were in fact a pretty impressive unit - disciplined yet courteous as they made their way down the sidewalk. But when they stopped and broke formation for their sticker pulling missions, it kind of diminished the effect for me - Pulling off stickers that will only be replaced the next day? What is that about?

These days, though, I like seeing people lead by example like that in public places. It’s not a demonstration designed to draw attention to itself and it doesn’t have any specific political cause, it's just a reminder to anyone who might happen to pass them by at the time that you too can have a direct and immediate say in your environment. Nice.
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

Misreading the topic as "Charlie's Angels", I clicked on this thread. Boy, what a disappointment...

I ran into them a couple of years ago while I was very drunk. All they did was complain. I tried to get them to fight me but they just called the cops who gave me a free ride back to the train. Back home I would have ended up in the hospital but here they score me free taxi service.
