Hotel Pacific To Close

The weak economy and increased competition has claimed a high profile victim in Tokyo's hotel industry. Keikyu has just announced that it will be closing the 954-room Hotel Pacific Tokyo in September 2010. Located directly across the road from the Takanawa exit of Shinagawa Station, the Pacific opened in 1971 and was the first hotel operated by the railway group. Keikyu say it would now require extensive renovation to compete in a crowded market and they are better off redeveloping the entire site. The company will continue to run the Takanawa Keikyu Hotel just across the street, which opened in 1989, as well as the Grand Pacific in Odaiba, which opened in 1998. They claim employees will be used in their remaining hotels and do not expect job losses.

Does that mean the TGIFridays there will be gone too?

I don't know what it says about me but that was my first thought too. It's part of the hotel complex so I guess it has to go. Licensing agreements and tenancy contracts are probably one reason why it will be eighteen months before they close their doors.

Not really sure what's going on but the complex has just reopened under the name Shinagawa Goos, and the nearby restaurants, including TGIFridays, are back in business.

[EDIT: Apparently, this was all decided back in January]

Am I the only one here who thinks this name is probably more appropriate (accurate??) if used with a love hotel? I can imagine quite a large number of goos being left in those places...

What made GOOS seem like a desirable name to the group of oyaji/ojichan who cooked it up in the first place? "Goo" and "GOO.N" et al seem to be taken. Did they start with "GOO" and then search out a good terminal letter? Why "GOO"? Because Andrew Dice Clay used in a naughty nursery rhyme of yore? Doubtful. Because it sounds "cute"? Probable.

Googoogaga?

-and the "flair" doesn't compensate

They've actually changed the menu a bit recently and in the process improved the taste of some things like their burgers.

During transit through Shinagawa today I had a chance to peek my head in for a few minutes. The transformation is amazing. They have turned a total shithole property into a total shithole property with new wallpaper, fresh flowers, and fucked up new-age music playing.

Incidentally, the entire Prince Hotel surrounding the GOOS is called MICE.

I haven't seen some thing this unintentionally funny in quite a while, complete with slogans like "MICE is the key word for times to come" and links for "examples of MICE" and "inquiry on MICE". Granted these services aren't targeted towards English speaking customers but you would have thought someone might have brought up the how the possible vermin connotation might have been ill suited for the hospitality industry as well as naming your multi-hotel complex "Mice City"....and it is only, what, about 3 or so miles from T-CAT ?

They chose MICE because they couldn't figure out how to make an effective acronym with LEMMINGS.

First, recognise the effort involved to shoehorn "incentive" into the MICE universe, guys. Not the first thing I think of when I think of a rental space, which is what this hotel provides.

I admit that I, also, am amazed that anyone would go with MICE. Especially, as Jerk has pointed out, given Hotel Pacific's past as a suicide powerspot, the same effort should have been put into creating a funky backronym for LEMMINGS.

But then again, I have never understood a businessbuilt on the concept of a mouse which laughs maniacally. We may mock, but we should mock consistently. This is not a one-off anomaly.

I walked past the Pacific a few months back one evening on the way to a meeting, and they had all the room lights arranged in some design (might have been a Christmas tree). While it looked impressive, I remembered being surprised that they had so few rooms rented out that they could successfully turn their entire hotel into a giant Lite-Brite.

That was during their renovation. The hotel was closed for business, so the entire place was empty.

Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.
