All of the article quoted in the original post is bullshit. It's obvious Spalding payed some Shibuya motherfuckers some money, and they changed the name of the street like obedient lapdogs.

I wondered about that too but I'm not so sure. Certainly, the fuss over Nike acquiring the naming rights to Miyashita Park means that Shibuya has previous in turning to corporate sponsorship. The fact it hasn't been mentioned could be that they want to fly well below the radar so as not to stir up similar protests.

It might also be, though, that it isn't a factor. If you are going to put up a ball image then you are pretty much obliged to show a Spalding ball. There's a fair chance Spalding donated them for free but had no hand in the naming decision, or any other involvement. This is a shopkeeper's association campaign rather than a council official renaming so there's less obvious benefit for Spalding.

No Japanese blogger has picked up on that aspect and they were very quick off the mark in reacting over Miyashita Park. Perhaps they are just slow on the uptake but I'll reserve judgement for now.
