Aren't there any legal avenues you can take in Japan to get back unpaid wages?

My wild guess, is that the flamer-bomb guy was doing "catch sales", off-the-book, for the delivery company that he blew up.

from Mainichi -- Sept. 16, 2003

...Company officials said the hostage taker had worked for them on a commission basis. Upon taking the hostages, he demanded wage payments for the months from July through September.

Keikyubin officials said they acceded to his request, transferring 250,000 yen in cash to his bank account at around noon.

Yep, " 250,000 yen" for two months wages sounds like the sad base salary of an outside sales guy. No doubt, he "tried his best" for a few weeks and decided to cruise on the base wages alone (most common trick). He stressed out when he discovered that Keikyubin wasn't gonna pay him anything BECAUSE he didn't sell anything from July to September (and he may have had a subcontract with a no-payment-of-base wages until he made his first sale).

Some one said this would happen!

Postby Shibuya Me » Wed Sep 17, 2003 12:07 pm

:crazy3:

I seem to recall someone on this site said that the next thing these stupid Japanese men will start doing is sabotage the company they work at!

When I saw this incident on tv, I applauded his insight!

Who was that? Anyone remember?

Hostage-taker planned to murder branch manager
(Kyodo News) Wednesday, September 17, 2003 at 12:00 JST
NAGOYA --- A 52-year-old man who took eight people hostage at an office building in Nagoya on Tuesday is believed to have orchestrated the crime to murder the branch manager of the courier firm Keikyubin Co....

The police believe his motive for the crime was not money but some grudge against the company, given that the amount of money he demanded was only 250,000 yen and that he also resisted releasing the hostages even after getting the wages he said had been owed to him for July, August and September, the sources said....

The branch office was responsible for assigning Beppu's deliveries, sources close to the company said, adding that frustration over his work might have led to his resentment against the branch manager.
