Fixed gear bikes are fucking awesome for training. Every cycling professional in the world owns one. They teach the rider proper technique and good energy management. If you are a fat fuck, 1 hour on a fixed gear will burn 25% more calories than a traditional road bike.

Riding one brakeless in tokyo is just fucking stupid. Traffic tends to travel much faster than most western cities and the drivers don't check for bikes in traffic. I have never ridden in a scarier place.

Back home, way back when I was a messenger, we used to use them because they are simple. Geared bikes tend to break down more and changing a flat outside takes longer. The frames are usually more durable. Potholes would destroy a road bike fork but because NJS is the standard for fixies, they are built using 1970's materials and methods. I got doored and hit by taxis a few times and my national never broke.

I fucking hate the fact that they are trendy now. Parts are 200 times more expensive than they were 15 years ago. Rims look like fucking skittles. The average rider has drop bars but never use them (we used to call them cookie cutters because if you crash the bars will cut a perfect circle in your thigh). And the average rider can only skid in one pedal position so they have to wait until the crank is in the right place before they can stop.

Riding without brakes in a Japanese city? Darwinism at its finest!
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Boston. I have ridden in NYC, DC, Chicago, LA,SF, and London and none are as scary as Tokyo. NYC is a bit nuts but the average speed is much slower and you know who to look out for. Here you need to watch every fucking vehicle and they are all doing more than 50kph (my average is 43). Back home I always outrun traffic, here... never.

Tokyo is really dangerous for riding because absolutely nobody (buses, taxis, pedestrians, those on mamacharis) pays attention to anything.

Another issue is the lack of bike lanes. Tokyo doesn't seem interested in assisting anyone who doesn't ride on sidewalks. Illegal parking at the roadside is another problem.

That graphic shows an increase in incidents involving fixed-gear bikes. That may be true, but there's no comparison with other bikes. The popularity of fixed-gear bikes is relatively new and it makes them an easy target. That's really all I can get out of this.

I've never once thought Tokyo was a scary city to ride in and I think drivers here are much better at watching for bikes than anywhere in the US. Pedestrians are another story though.

If I had to live in Boston, I'd want to die in a bicycle accident.

Maybe it's not the cars that are the cause of car-bike accidents in Japan. Cyclists here (and I'm not talking about "proper" cyclists ... I mean the average obasan/ojisan/student) seem to be doing the best they can to kill themselves most of the time. They totally ignore the most basic traffic rules, swerve out in front of traffic to cross the road wherever they feel like it without signaling or even looking, and just sort of float aimlessly around the road as they like. They seem to assume that traffic will avoid them so they don't have to worry about it. They are terrifying to drive around.

When I was a pedestrian I used to wish cyclists would stay on the road where they should be. Now that I drive most of the time I wish they'd stay on the sidewalk.

when they walk... they look at their feet or where their foot would land in their next footstep... fuggin stupid as all hell. not to mention they have to time the escalator before they get on it like it is double dutch jump roping...

i dont know where they look when the ride bikes. when i go on bike rides with the kids and wify (they are on back of bike) she NEVER stays on one side of the side walk and I have to keep yelling at her to do so. Fuggin stupid. It is like she is in a fuggin slalom.

when I am on foot with the kids, I always have to put my arm out to guard me and the boys from some stupid fuck on their bike. they dont slow down, nothing...

how about banning all bikes on the side walk and taxis stopping in places that you cant park at? no, lets stop the fixies first...

My problem with the fixie is no so much with the no brakes, anyone who know how to ride on can stop, but rather the beard and hipster attached. Surly not so much a problem in tokyo these days but being back in Brooklyn it is a huge problem.

That's what Massholes do.
Worst drivers in the USA. You'd think the Big Dig would have taught them situational awareness and such.
The silver lining is that growing up in a Masshole infested area, you learn defensive driving damn quick.

You also learn offensive driving,
"My $600 Nissan has the right of way over your BMW, Masshole. Because I don't give a shit if I get a scratch on my paint job. "

as a random pedestrian, cyclist, motorcyclist and car driver I blame everyone except me

I think the Japanese have one thing right, putting the onus on the person driving the larger vehicle to have more responsibility. Cars are made to protect the driver, they need to be made to watch out for other people because they are not the ones that get hurt.

Not so sure about that...I mean, I've heard crazy stories from friends who hit pedestrians/cyclists that literally came out of nowhere, with no regard for traffic. (for example, the car has no stop sign at an intersection, the cyclist does but pedals on through right as the car is coming...in Japan, the responsibility is on the driver of the car, despite the fact that the only dangerous act/cause of the collision is the cyclist's doing.

TIJ. Look at all the sunk fishing boats, where the winning captains, i.e., JSDF and others, have lost in court later. The big guy is supposed to have the right away, but not in J-court......

Personally, I think fixie riders (off the tracks) are brain damaged, but live and let live.

Fixie riders in traffic without brakes are menaces and likely don't know what they're doing.

The guy in that video doing stunts in traffic is a class-A asshole who gives every other cyclist a bad reputation. I hope he gets more than a fine from the police.
I have a blog. Last update: August 18, 2013.
