Mainichi Daily News targets Japanese readers

Postby Captain Japan » Thu Apr 05, 2012 5:30 pm

Mainichi Daily News merges into new site
The Mainichi Daily News, the English news site of the Mainichi Newspapers Co., has been reorganized into a new site as of April 5, 2012. The English site is now part of the Japanese news site, Mainichi.jp, and under the new name, "The Mainichi," it aims to be a news site targeting not only readers around the world, including those in English-speaking regions, but also Japanese people learning English.

Not exactly "all the news that's fit to print."

There is some English news there but the site is messy and poorly organized. The problem with targeting everybody is that you end up getting no one.
My guess is that it'll last about two months.

Isn't it kind of cheeky calling this an "English" website?!

When you click on 'The Manichi' you get more English stories, and when you click again on the subcatergories such as 'sports' you get more English stories. Bad design.

Nope, it's superior japanese design with 4 seasons, just that you and your barbarian brain can't perceive it's true purity.

Or it's actually just full of shit...

You are assuming they are looking to attract a readership. I'm not so sure that's the case.

It's like a throwback site, back to late '90s. For an example of what I mean, take a look at the current Gomiuri.

Okay, I'll bite. So what are they trying to do? Save money by running the site as cheaply as possible without actually admitting failure.

Such a masterpiece:

Aiming to restart idled reactors at the Oi nuclear power plant in Fukui Prefecture, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has instructed ministers related to nuclear power safety to quickly draw up a new set of safety criteria based on lessons learned from the crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant

It's not a news site, it's the japanese edition of the Onion...

All of which explains why FG is my primary source of news in Japan.

I'm still trying to decide if that is a good thing or not.
